The Story Behind Knocked Sideways

If you've seen my Instagram, you already know that I started writing Knocked Sideways after the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

I was scared for my family. I needed to spend time in a world where being queer or trans wasn’t viewed as a problem or a threat or worse.

Reading romance novels has always been the best kind of escape for me. There's nothing like a guaranteed HEA, after all. But in November 2024, I couldn't get my grabby little hands on enough queer romance to quiet my brain.

So I started writing. I'd been studying craft for a while and finally decided to let myself go and write exactly what I wanted to read. And it turned out—much to my wife's surprise—that what I wanted to read and write was male hockey superstars falling hard for each other in a world where that's unremarkable.

Jed and Remy have their challenges, of course. Remy's been traded and dumped and he's worried about his sister and how he's going to fit in on his new team. Jed would tell you that he's perfectly fine and not a bit lonely, but he'd be lying to you and to himself, and Remy makes him realize that pretty quickly. Neither of them thinks that falling for a teammate is a great plan.

But the fact that they're both queer is just that—a fact, not the problem of their story.

And making them fall hard despite their best intentions was so much fun.
